Robert’s career path is unconventional. He arrived at architecture after working in Arctic mines and oilfields; on farms, assembly lines, and sailboats; and collaborating with artists and arts organizations in New York City. Through this diverse experience, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach that is methodical yet flexible. As an architect and project manager, his leadership style adapts to best suit each project, client, and team. Above all, he seeks to eliminate ambiguity, contradiction, and discord by aligning teams to a singular mission. He establishes trust and manages risk, ensuring that his client’s vision and goals are aligned upon early and executed successfully.

Robert finds that the most successful projects begin with curiosity and focused critical questioning. This first step helps to identify opportunities within the project for rigorous research and exploration. Following this process leads teams to unique solutions and strategies, addressing the client’s priorities while solving their most critical problems and delivering design excellence.

Robert believes that research powers innovation by allowing us to question and resist the status quo. He leverages Perkins&Will’s firmwide research to validate decisions and improve outcomes for clients. This can be in the form of data that leads to evidence-based design, or a specialized digital tool that holistically improves building facade performance and energy consumption.

Innovation Incubator

Alongside colleagues, Robert explored the development of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) solutions in New York City through Perkins&Will’s Innovation Incubator program. The study generated an educational tool that leverages artificial reality (AR) to visualize fictional LDES technologies in the real world. It explores physical parameters impacting energy storage capabilities, and potential integration into New York City’s new and existing building stock.

Outside the Studio

Robert’s interest in the arts has led him to projects such as these portable, modular studio kits for the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council. The moveable display panels can be used to support artist studio programs in underutilized buildings and office spaces, and at their location on Governors Island.
