DALLAS—Global architecture and design firm Perkins&Will has named Vandana Nayak as the next managing director of the firm’s largest studio. Nayak has led the firm’s education practice in the U.S. Southwest region since joining the Dallas studio in 2017. She succeeds Tom Reisenbichler, who helped establish the studio more than two decades ago and will continue to oversee business strategy and performance as Regional Director for the U.S. Southwest.

“Tom has done more than lead our studio—he’s given it a heart and soul,” says Nayak. “I’m humbled to build on such a strong foundation of design excellence and community impact. This studio truly cares about elevating the quality of life for our clients and our people through innovative design, and it’s an honor to lead the team forward into our new chapter.” Nayak and Reisenbichler have been working together closely for the last year to ensure a smooth transition.

“It’s an emotional decision for me to pass the baton, but it’s one I’m proud to make because we’ve found the right person,” says Reisenbichler, who will now focus on client relationships and key projects. “Vandana embodies the bold, community-minded spirit we’ve cultivated since day one, and she’s exceptional at creating and maintaining a clear vision. I think she’s the ideal leader to keep our energy up and eyes on the future while nurturing this incredible pool of talent and delivering the caliber of work we’re known for.”

This leadership transition comes at a time of growing momentum for Perkins&Will in Dallas, having recently taken on the largest projects in the studio’s history: a multibillion-dollar pediatric hospital for Children’s Hospital and UT Southwestern Medical Center, the redesign of the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center Dallas, and the largest project on campus at the University of Texas at Dallas, a new Student Success Center/Student Union.

Vandana Nayak: Clear Vision, Proven Impact

Nayak has more than 25 years of experience planning and designing education projects across North America, and over $3 billion in construction value across Texas. In her eight years with the Dallas studio, she has grown its K-12 and Higher Education practices in the Southwest region, managing complex teams and cultivating longstanding relationships with education clients.

Her work has been recognized for its forward-looking design and innovative planning that enhances well-being. Notable projects include Mulva Hall, the undergraduate business building underway at the University of Texas at Austin’s McCombs Business School; the Collin College Technical Campus, a vocational building for one of Texas’s fastest-growing counties that earned multiple awards from AIA and The Texas Society of Architects; the Caudill-winning Berkner High School STEM Exploration Center, an interactive space inspiring Richardson ISD students to pursue scientific careers; and the IIDA- and AIA-award winning Querétaro Campus Residence Hall at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, one of Mexico’s leading universities.

Born in Bangalore, India, Nayak moved to Texas at the start of her career. Active in community development, she serves on the board of directors for the DFW Chapter of the ACE Mentor Program—a free after-school program creating opportunities for high school students to connect with the design and construction industry—and as board member for AdEx, the scholarship foundation for AIA Dallas. She has also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for Boys Scout of America. She is a frequent speaker at education and design conferences in the region, discussing topics from leadership, student success, and adaptive reuse to planning strategies that heighten student engagement.

A Legacy of Growth in the Southwest

With more than 250 staff, Dallas is currently the largest of Perkins&Will’s 32 studios around the world. The team there collaborates closely with other studios in the U.S. Southwest region, including Austin, San Antonio, and Houston, as well as in Monterrey, Mexico. Reisenbichler, who played a critical role in the opening of the Austin, Monterrey, and  San Antonio studios, and continues to provide strategic leadership to them.

As Nayak takes the helm of the Dallas studio, she plans to build on the momentum Reisenbichler created. In addition to major projects currently underway, the studio is continuing to grow practices in transportation, cultural and civic, and branded environments. “Our clients recognize us as a sought-after design partner for complex projects, and we will continue to deliver work that makes a positive impact in our community,” says Nayak.

In recent years, the Dallas studio has earned broad recognition for its contributions to the city, state, and region. Last year, it won the Texas Society of Architects’ 2024 Firm Award, the highest honor bestowed upon a firm by the state chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In 2023, the Dallas Architecture Forum honored three of the studio’s projects for improving the Dallas-Fort Worth area’s social and urban fabric: the Baylor Scott & White Health Administrative Center; the Singing Hills Recreation and Senior Center; and the Pittman Hotel, which earned awards in two categories—adaptive reuse and hospitality. Jurors also named the studio’s Fair Park Master Plan Update as one of the 10 projects in progress with the greatest potential to positively impact North Texas.

“One of our greatest strengths is the strong design culture we have here in our Dallas studio,” Nayak says. “This is a great place to work, and I’m passionate about keeping it that way.”
