Toronto’s Urban Design Team to Present at The 2019 Canadian Institute of Planners Conference

Join us as we share our most inspiring urban design projects, stories, and lessons learned.

Our Toronto studio is proud to join the Canadian Institute of Planners in celebrating its 100^th anniversary at the 2019 CIP Conference, “Generation,” held July 3-6 in Ottawa, Ontario.

Four of our urban design and planning staff–Clara Romero, Rebecca Ramsey, Janice Cheung, and Eunice Wong–will present at three conference sessions. They’ll share stories and lessons learned through a review of their most inspiring projects and initiatives.

Collaboration and engagement are integral values of planning and design at Perkins&Will. We look forward to connecting with you there to share our stories.

The “R” Word: Resilience as a process (SS-19)
Thursday July 4 – 3:45 to 5:00 PM – Ontario Level 3

Highlighting our contribution as the Strategy Partner to the City of Toronto’s first ever Resilience Strategy, this session will reflect on the innovative approaches to talking about equity and risk in a growing urban context. Toronto’s changing climate will mean more extreme and costly weather events, which will be felt most by the most vulnerable populations. Led by Rebecca Ramsey, AICP, Planner and Eunice Wong, Planner/Urban Designer from Perkins&Will; along with Amy Buitenhuis, Senior Policy Consultant from the City of Toronto, this is a process-focused presentation and discussion on how to define resilience, navigate the traditional divisions of planning, and explore opportunities for collaboration to tackle the ever-changing shocks and stressors facing communities in Toronto. This session will be moderated by François Lapointe.

Building for Urban Liveability: Shaping built form through a people-first lens (SS-48)
Friday July 5 – 3:45 to 5:00 PM – Governor General II, Level 4, Weston Hotel

As cities continue to experience rapid growth, it is increasingly important to address liveability alongside development. The development of the TOcore Building for Liveability Study took a new and innovative approach to achieving the five factors of liveability – comfort, vibrancy, diversity, safety and beauty – through built form policy. This presentation will feature the Perkins&Will consultant team, Clara Romero, Senior Urban Designer and Eunice Wong, Planner/Urban Designer, as well as The City of Toronto, represented by Shawna Bowen, Urban Designer/Project Manager. The group will share how the study methodology centered on the idea that new buildings should contribute to and enhance liveability through improvements to the public realm, provision of ground floor design and integration of amenity spaces. This session will be moderated by Paul Kulig, Principal of Urban Design and Transit at Perkins&Will.

Engaging the Next Generation of Changemakers: Cities for youth workshop (SS-56)
Saturday July 6 – 9:00am to 10:15am, Provinces II – Level 4 (Westin Hotel)

Youth are the future generation of city builders. As the project we work on at Perkins&Will diversify, it is becoming increasingly important to engage youth as active stakeholders, enabling their voices to be heard in the decision-making process. This presentation will feature Planner/Urban Designer, Janice Cheung of Perkins&Will, alongside Ryan Lo and Angela Ng, co-founders of Urban Minds. This workshop will explore the four levels of youth engagement: awareness, education, need-finding and co-creation to help planning practitioners and decision-makers reimagine what youth participation can look like to innovate and build on their existing practices. Increased inclusivity and accessibility of youth to city building opportunities will not only benefit the planning community as a whole but also enrich the personal connection that people have to their place.
