Rick Young

AIA, LEED AP
Associate Principal, K-12 Education, Chicago

Rick always loved to draw, paint and build as a child. He was often found sketching in a notebook, building model airplanes, or painting small figurines. When he discovered his mother’s log cabin planning books, it was a natural step to start studying the layouts and drawing up his own floor plans. It always seemed like these interests would lead Rick to the field of architecture.

Rick finds immense joy in collaborating with stakeholders for educational settings. By understanding their needs, fears, and aspirations for their everyday spaces, he guides them toward envisioning possibilities beyond the limitations they know and getting them to open up to what can be an invigorating experience. Witnessing the gratitude of teachers, students, and communities at the journey’s end is deeply fulfilling for him.

"When a student came up to me during the opening ceremony of the Haskins Library and said 'thank you for giving us everything we asked for' it really changed for me the gravity of what we do."

Rick’s passion for soccer extends beyond the field. As a volunteer coach and AYSO board member, he instills the sport's values and joys in his community. This same commitment drives him to create inspiring learning environments for students, guiding them toward a brighter future.
