Eastern Market

Detroit, Michigan
Resurgence of Urban Vitality

The Eastern Market neighborhood symbolizes the rebirth of a formerly booming industrial city that suffered decades of decline. The project site will create a critical link between Eastern Market, Lafayette Park, the Dequindre Cut and will infuse an intense concentration of urban vitality in one of Detroit’s most dynamic emerging districts.

The Eastern Market Gateway will be transformed from an empty, abandoned site into a vibrant destination with retail shops, restaurants, galleries, as well as apartments and live-work units. The design incorporates fragments of historic industrial buildings and a brick-paved pedestrian alley network as well as murals by noted artists. Reflecting Detroit’s resurgence as a desirable urban destination for businesses, residents, and visitors, the project will provide housing, working, and shopping choices for the new generation of urban entrepreneurs.

The project captures the colorful spirit of Detroit Eastern Market neighborhood and highlights existing murals by local artists.

Eastern Market combines mixed-use space with affordable housing. A convergence of apartments, workshops, galleries, shops, and food venues will be woven into the fabric of existing warehouses and light industrial buildings around the existing alley network.

Service Street will become an active pedestrian street and retail alley.
Sustainable strategies include preserving the historic Busy Bee façade and material reuse throughout the site.
Connectivity

Courtyards, rooftop decks, and pedestrian alleys will generate a distinctive urban energy and will encourage the social space to make this a welcome new addition to the Eastern Market community.
