Creating a Cohesive Culture for Scientists

Illumina’s newest state-of-the-art campus in Foster City, California brings together occupants from currently isolated sites across the Bay Area. The interior space is designed to create a new, cohesive culture for scientists and their support staff. Desks and meeting rooms have sight lines out to the plaza and the Bay beyond.

Extensive collaboration zones feature hoteling desks, places to socialize, and a wide variety of conference rooms from open and transparent, to formal and closed, that line the southern wings of the structures. Each building is centered around the central green plaza, which boasts an outdoor amphitheater, meeting space, and rec features to foster healthy, engaged employees.

The campus is Intended to have a collegiate feel.
What Makes it Cool
Illumina’s Foster City campus focuses on collaborative work and lab spaces—a feature many traditional life science buildings do not have.
Spaces are meant to create synergy, collaboration, openness and flexibility.
We created a collaborative new workplace to complement Illumina's start-up mindset.
Extensive collaboration zones can be found throughout campus.
Envisioning a Campus

The campus is meant to have a collegiate feel, which was part of Illumina’s strategy to attract recent Ph.D’s. Outdoor space and a 40,000 square-foot amenity building add to the college-campus aesthetic, and encourage employees to connect with others and bring their work outside of their traditional office space.

Natural lighting is a major part of the Illumina campus.
