RBC Borealis

Toronto, Ontario

Created by RBC, Borealis AI is an artificial intelligence research and development group within the financial services industry. Proudly Canadian, and recognized on the global AI stage, the organization envisioned a workplace that would differentiate its business unit while supporting innovation and growth. As its team of scientists, engineers, and product experts expanded, our team was engaged to design a bespoke environment that would attract and retain top talent. The result is a welcoming and inspiring space tailored to support leading-edge AI research and development.

A Contemporary Cabin Retreat

Inspired by Canadian landscapes, the Borealis AI office evokes the character of a contemporary cabin retreat, where ambitious ideas meet comfort and informality. At its heart is a central gathering space designed for connection and community. This flexible hub accommodates large group events and everyday interactions, offering a well-appointed pantry, casual lounge areas, games, and a fireplace that anchors the space. Adaptable furniture and operable partitions allow the area to be reconfigured to support a range of activities and event sizes.

A series of elongated portals defines the transition between collaborative and focused work zones. These elements draw inspiration from the east and west coasts of Canada, encouraging shifts in behaviour as users move through the space while reinforcing a strong narrative identity. The workplace is designed to support both analog and digital modes of working, integrating ergonomic furniture, active workstations, and biophilic design strategies. Natural, healthy materials and connections to nature enhance occupant well-being and overall experience.

The arrival sequence introduces visitors to a warm, wood-clad lounge and a farmhouse-inspired kitchen. This layered environment supports socializing, dining, working, and collaboration. Natural materials, a fireplace, and curated furnishings create a sense of familiarity and retreat, offering respite from the pace of urban life. Thoughtful details such as a framed entry door, greenery, and soft lighting contribute to a welcoming first impression.

Adjacent to the main social space is a unique “dock” room, designed as an immersive retreat. Here, users can relax in Muskoka chairs, take in lake-inspired views, and experience a dynamic ceiling installation reminiscent of the northern lights. A full-height mural, developed in collaboration with Moss and Lam, brings an artistic interpretation of nature into the workplace. Rich textures and reflective finishes create depth and movement, reinforcing a sense of calm and connection to the natural environment.

Given the needs of research and coding teams, careful attention was paid to acoustic performance. Enhanced sound control measures, including absorptive materials, high-performance partitions, and integrated sound masking, reduce noise and reverberation to support focused work.

Despite the compact footprint, the design establishes a clear distinction between social and quiet zones. The portals serve as both physical and psychological thresholds, guiding movement and signaling behavioural shifts. Interactive LED installations respond to motion, while custom graphics, glazing, and signage differentiate the east and west coast work areas. Distinct material palettes provide choice and variety, with vibrant tones referencing the rugged landscapes and coastal communities of the east, and calm, neutral finishes reflecting the forests and mountains of the west.
