Swedish First Hill Medical Center North Tower
The transformation of the Swedish First Hill Medical Center consolidates two adjacent medical campuses. It comprises nearly 1 million square feet of new construction and 250,000 square feet of renovation, enabling, and make-ready projects. The North Tower is a new 240-foot-tall inpatient facility that connects to existing buildings both below and above grade. It features a new Emergency Department, Inpatient Imaging, 24 Operating Rooms, Cath and EP Procedure Rooms, and 216 intensive care beds. Additionally, there will be a new public concourse and registration area that links to a modernized public entry. Below grade, the North Tower is connected to Block 95, the main logistic and supply center, via a new tunnel.

Hospital officials say the project will ensure that the health system remains viable for the next century. The entire expansion will more than double the size of the Providence Swedish campus from approximately 1.5 million to 3.15 million square feet. Construction will expand beyond both the North Tower and Block 95 to source non-fossil fuel steam and reclaim waste heat. The goal is to make the entire Swedish system carbon negative by 2030.
A well-organized system of connectivity with clear and intuitive wayfinding will enhance the overall patient experience. When complete, the project will improve nearly every service and program on the campus to meet the immediate and future strategic, operational, and facility needs of the institution. It will transform the patient and family experience at Swedish First Hill and make a significant contribution to the evolution of the First Hill neighborhood.
