Gabrielle Bullock Receives Gold Medal Honor from AIA LA

Our Director of Global Diversity will be honored at a ceremony in October.

Gabrielle Bullock, one of the most influential champions of diversity and inclusion in the architecture profession worldwide, has earned the highest honor from the American Institute of Architect’s Los Angeles chapter (AIA LA): the 2022 Gold Medal.

“Being honored with the 2022 Gold Medal from the AIA LA has renewed my faith that excellence in the architecture profession goes beyond beautiful buildings to include a holistic contribution to building and uplifting community, creating a sense of belonging and addressing social justice and equity,” says Bullock. In addition to her leadership in our Los Angeles studio she holds the firmwide position of Director of Global Diversity for the firm, an industry-pioneering role she created in 2013.

“Gabrielle is a force in the architecture profession and someone I have looked up to my entire career,” says Kimberly Dowdell, a fellow trailblazer in architecture and the first Black woman to become president of the AIA. “She is so deserving of this recognition of her achievement as an architect, a leader, and a role model for others.”

Among her many projects, Bullock is helping to lead Destination Crenshaw, an outdoor celebration of Black culture in LA that will run along the historic Crenshaw Boulevard.

“Because of Gabrielle’s leadership, the design and history of the Crenshaw community are embedded in the improvements that this important cultural hub will provide,” says Jason Foster, president and COO of Destination Crenshaw.

In 2020, Bullock won the national AIA Whitney M. Young Award  for her exemplary commitment to justice, equity, engagement, diversity, and inclusion. “I have devoted my career to positively impacting lives through design and I am humbled and honored to be recognized for my contributions,” she says.

Bullock will be honored at a ceremony on October 27, 2022 at the BroadStage in Santa Monica, California.
