University of Utah Research Park Awarded APA Utah High Achievement in Master Planning

We’re excited to share that the University of Utah Research Park Strategic Vision has received a High Achievement Award for a Master Plan or Study from the American Planning Association (APA) Utah! This award celebrates projects that make an exceptional contribution to planning and that the APA believes deserve recognition of the highest achievement.

The Master Plan or Study award category honors completed plans or studies that complement and enhance the existing community. The UURP Strategic Vision champions transit-oriented development, a diverse mix of uses, state of the art sustainable infrastructure, and forward-thinking leadership, to ensure that Salt Lake City becomes one of the greenest, most inclusive, and economically viable cities in the country.

From the base of the Wasatch Mountains, the UURP Strategic Vision lays out a regenerative design framework for the built and natural landscape to ensure improved air quality, enhanced biodiversity, temperature regulation, and a district wide water reclamation strategy. These ecological functions are integrated into a series of diverse and experience-rich public spaces. The emphasis on ecological urbanism allows the landscape to become both context and the unifying armature of green infrastructure that embodies regenerative design strategies.

The UURP Strategic Vision catalyzes collaboration across disciplines – bringing the Research Park, Main Campus, and the Health Sciences Campus together under President Watkin’s “One U” Vision. The University cares about its neighbors and has places within the Research Park that serve as a community hearth, inviting the Utahns to contribute to the health and vitality of the University. The University has provided everyday amenities and spaces for special events to support a more compact, walkable community. We envision the Research Park as a bridge between the University and the surrounding neighborhoods, a place to invite the community to solve problems together to create a better Salt Lake City for current and future generations.
