Bill Doerge

Principal, Civic and Cultural, Chicago

Brought up in a small town near the deep ravines and windswept rock ledges of the Shawnee National Forest in Illinois, Bill was instilled with a curiosity for everything the world has to offer: environments both natural and built, people and cultures both familiar and new. Upon graduating from college he bought a one-way ticket to Europe and traveled with a friend until they ran out of money. The trip took them through Europe and North Africa, and after one year, back to the United States.

Upon his return, Bill began work as an architect but once again left American shores for an assignment in Greece. He designed cities in Libya, then moved with his wife and daughter to Saudi Arabia, before settling back in the U.S. It is in these environments of both uncertainty and promise that Bill thrives.

Bill believes that design should be good, but it also needs to be functional and plan-driven. This pragmatic approach has led him to work on a diversity of complex projects across the globe. Today, he is trusted to employ this process with some of Perkins and Will’s most challenging international projects.
