Element Labs, University Research Park

Madison, Wisconsin
A Gateway for Science

Occupying the most visible corner of University Research Park, Element Labs challenges the traditional lab building model. Instead of a closed, car-oriented workplace, it offers an open, community-facing environment where science and nature come together. The five-story building houses four levels of flexible, multi-tenant lab and office space above a vibrant, public ground floor. By combining transparency, civic presence, and environmental stewardship, Element Labs signals a new era for Madison’s growing life sciences community.

A Front Door for Discovery

Element Labs rejects the notion of isolating research from society. Its ground floor is designed as a shared asset for the entire park and surrounding community, featuring a restaurant, informal lounge spaces, and Element Hall, a multi-purpose venue for gatherings, events, and informal collaboration. Expansive glazing puts activity on display, turning the work of its diverse scientific tenants into a visible part of the community.

The massing, with its interlocking cubes and textured fins, create a distinctive, dynamic profile at the intersection of Whitney Way and Mineral Point Road.
Rooted in Madison's Landscape

The site’s natural slope and restored wetland landscape are more than backdrops. They’re working elements of the design. Stormwater management, biodiversity support, and panoramic views connect the building to Madison’s enviornment. Outdoor spaces link directly to regional trail systems, reinforcing the city’s culture of biking, walking, and outdoor living.
