NEW YORK―The New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) has enlisted a consortium of partners to develop and design a cutting-edge innovation hub at the Brooklyn Army Terminal (BAT) in Sunset Park, as part of a long-term commitment to developing the city’s green economy. Called BATWorks, this new facility will transform a significant portion of the historic site into an innovation incubator for emerging businesses, primarily in the clean tech and energy sectors.
“BATWorks will unlock new opportunities for startups and entrepreneurs, advance new innovative climate solutions, fuel job growth, and strengthen Brooklyn’s working waterfront—all while training New Yorkers of all backgrounds for green-collar jobs,” says NYCEDC President and CEO Andrew Kimball.
Perkins&Will is the only architecture firm selected to join the team that will collaborate on the design of the co-working, incubation, lab prototyping, and trial assembly facilities. The awarded consortium—led by NYCEDC partners Los Angeles Cleantech Incubator (LACI) and Cambridge Innovation Center (CIC)—also includes The City University of New York (CUNY) and New York University (NYU), as well as the Urban Future Lab at NYU Tandon.
“There are some projects that capture everything some of us aspire to as designers in New York City,” says Mariana Giraldo, design principal at Perkins&Will. “BATWorks allows us to contribute to a mission-driven initiative in support of the green economy, partner with leading organizations bringing innovation and impact to life, and collaborate with individuals who pour their hearts into designing beautiful, meaningful, and resilient places.”
