Architizer Names Us “Best Sustainable Firm” in their 2023 A+Awards

The honor recognizes our leadership and innovation in sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental design over the last decade.

We’re excited to reveal that we’ve won the “Best Sustainable Firm” contest in Architizer’s 2023 A+ Awards for our excellence in the fields of sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental design.

Architizer’s criteria for the category saw us judged on aesthetics, performance, and impact. A jury selected us for our most sustainable efforts throughout the last 10 years, including the University of Washington Life Sciences Building, the Toronto Metropolitan University Daphne Cockwell Health Sciences Complex, and the Sacramento Valley Station Master Plan

Beyond projects, our researchers have long teamed up with global think tanks, academia, and nonprofits to lead the development of cutting-edge tools and initiatives that advance the entire profession toward equity, health, and decarbonization via our “Living Design” framework. These include EC3, a digital dashboard for comparing products’ carbon impacts; tallyCAT, a Revit plugin that will simplify the specification of low-carbon materials during design; ResilientSEE, a global alliance committed to rebuilding a resilient Puerto Rico; and Carbon Forecasts, which help identify a project’s whole-life carbon profile at the earliest stages of design.

The “Living Design” philosophy has had the added benefit of attracting some of the best and brightest sustainability talent in the industry to our firm. For example, in July 2022, we welcomed McLennan Design to the firm; together with Jason F. McLennan—creator of The Living Building Challenge and the JUST organization label—we’re working to scale up and accelerate decarbonization.

Architizer’s A+Awards help “nurture the appreciation of meaningful design in the world and champion its potential for positive impact on everyday life. We share the world’s best architecture with a global audience of 400+ million.”

This year’s jury included such leaders in architecture as David Benjamin, Suchi Reddy, Koichi Takada, and Wandile Mthiyane, as well as luminaries from beyond architecture like Mari Balestrazzi, Airbnb; Yves Behar, Fuseproject; David Rockwell, Rockwell Group; and BBC host Jay Blades.

Architizer itself has the core mission “to empower architects by connecting designers with building-product manufacturers through their inspiring content, awards programs, competitions, and global reach. We connect architects with the tools they need to build better buildings, better cities, and a better world.”
