Bowling Green State University, College of Business Maurer Center

Bowling Green, Ohio

At Bowling Green State University, the Maurer Center redefines business education by bringing together the best of academic tradition and modern professional learning. As the home of the Schmidthorst College of Business, this visionary renovation and addition transformed historic Hanna Hall into a dynamic, 24/7 home for the College of Business. Through a design that prioritizes openness, sustainability, and technological advancement, the Maurer Center immerses students, faculty, and industry partners in a culture of collaboration and real-world learning, equipping future leaders with the skills they need to thrive.

The exterior of the building blends restored historic brick with modern glass elements, reflecting its integration of tradition and innovation.
Honoring History, Embracing the Future

The Maurer Center elegantly merges past and present, restoring one of BGSU’s oldest campus buildings while introducing a modern addition designed to reflect the college’s innovative spirit. The original brick facade of Hanna Hall stands as a warm reminder of the university’s history, now embraced by a light-filled, glass-walled atrium that invites engagement and interaction. This blend of old and new showcases the timelessness of BGSU’s values, creating a space where tradition meets cutting-edge learning.

Open and light-filled areas encourage interaction among students and faculty, bridging academic and professional learning.
The Intersection of Collaboration and Technology

Designed to inspire collaboration and prepare students for a rapidly evolving business world, flexible classrooms with moveable walls and modular furniture enable students to engage in real-world problem-solving, product planning, and interdisciplinary research.

Technology seamlessly integrates into the learning environment, reinforcing the college’s emphasis on data analytics and real-time business insights. The “Viz Lab” showcases the latest in communication technology, while a dynamic digital ticker embedded in the atrium staircase streams breaking business news and social media highlights. Together, these elements create an environment where students gain hands-on experience with the tools and practices shaping the future of business.

Throughout the building, open meeting areas and collaborative spaces encourage connections between students, faculty, and industry leaders, fostering a culture of teamwork and innovation.
Sustainability

Sustainability guided every step of the building’s transformation. By reusing approximately 50% of Hanna Hall’s original structure, the project minimized its environmental impact while preserving a piece of the university’s heritage. A glass-enclosed atrium, positioned to filter soft northern light, reduces heat gain in summer while maintaining a consistent, energy-efficient environment. With sustainable materials, energy-efficient glazing, and climate-responsive site orientation, the Maurer Center exemplifies the university’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
