Bridgeland-Riverside Bridge Conceptual Design
The 30-acre St. Patrick’s Island, located northeast of Calgary’s downtown core, is one of the city’s oldest parks. In 2015, it was redeveloped to create an amenity-rich and family-friendly natural park space for all Calgarians to enjoy.
The adjacent Bridgeland-Riverside neighbourhood has recently grown and increased in density, but there is currently no easy way for inhabitants to access the island and its amenities from the community. As a result, the Calgary General Hospital Legacy Fund Committee commissioned a feasibility study to explore new, universally accessible, and multimodal connections between Bridgeland-Riverside and St. Patrick’s Island.
Building upon the approach taken in the redevelopment of St. Patrick’s Island, the new bridge will minimize disruption of and impact on the island’s natural and existing ecology. Re-naturalizing the connection between the community and the Bow River focused around resilience, community experience and wellbeing, the bridge will bring natural landscape to the urban environment and incorporate native and hearty landscape on throughout the design.
