Candlestick Center Innovation District
We were engaged by FivePoint to amend the Design for Development for the 22.3-acre Candlestick Point, the footprint of the former NFL stadium owned by the City and County of San Francisco and former home of the San Francisco 49ers. Redevelopment of this area, which is largely underdeveloped and separated from the urban grid of the city, represents a rare opportunity to create an entirely new shoreline community within the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood.
Candlestick Center Innovation District’s design framework strives to seamlessly integrate with the rest of the Candlestick and Bayview neighborhoods, emphasizing vibrant, engaging public spaces and featuring a walkable environment that allows a variety of commercial and residential land uses to be connected through a network of paseos and a central promenade.
An Innovation District is a place for multi-dimensional collaboration that focuses on employment, innovation, and entrepreneurship, with an emphasis on research and development. Candlestick Center is one of four neighborhoods within Candlestick Point offering a vibrant live, work, play ecosystem. With residential, recreation, and an economic center all within walkable distance, Candlestick Center plays a vital role in creating a hub for employment, entertainment, and recreation. The Innovation District framework supports a mix of uses that ensures flexibility to adapt to future market conditions.
To honor Candlestick’s rich history, streets will bear the names of local sports legends and community leaders, as selected by residents. Prominent historical markers will celebrate the iconic game-winning touchdown reception in the 1981 NFC championship game played between the Dallas Cowboys and the eventual Super Bowl XVI champion San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park on January 10th, 1982.
The legacy of this place will continue as Candlestick Center evolves into a hub of community life, innovation, entertainment, and culture, while serving as a flexible economic engine.
