Fazenda da Grama Residence

São Paulo, Brazil
Striking lines and overlapping volumes blend interior and exterior

Surrounded by green countryside, the Fazenda da Grama Residence takes advantage of the sloping terrain’s uneven topography to organize the lives of the residents in the midst of nature and blur the lines between the interior and the exterior. A combination of striking lines and overlapping volumes–sometimes leaning against each other, sometimes distant from each other–accompanied by skylights and transparencies, allows strategic framings of the landscape and creates unique relationships between inside and outside. The home blends with its setting to ignite the curiosity of those who inhabit it.

WHAT MAKES IT COOL
Paths that allow transitions between blocks provide different architectural experiences; new perspectives are revealed at every turn.

With five sectors (intimate, social, fun, guests, and services) spread over three levels and 1300 square meters, the main purpose of the house is to protect the private life of the family, a couple and their two children. At the same time, it is inviting without giving up its predominant horizontality. On the lower level are the service and social accesses. An extensive staircase leads to the intermediate level, where the main attractions of the home are concentrated: the social block, with a multifunctional room directly connected to the patio, lawn, and swimming pool. There, a pergola shades the path and connects to the marquee, crossing the volume and perpendicularly connecting all sectors. The top level is the intimate area, private and isolated from other uses.

Landscaping by Renata Tilli and Juliana do Val (Gaia Projetos) reinforces the integration with nature: the home seems to rest delicately on a pre-existing garden. Through jabuticaba fruit trees, a fish pond, and organic lines that complement the rhythm of the plants, nature is brought into the project and the limits between internal and external are eased. Vegetation also serves as a protective barrier, positioned laterally to the social sector and enclosing the pool area, to counteract the proximity of the residence to Viracopos Airport.

Light-toned materials derived from nature dialogue directly with the initiative to blend harmoniously with the landscape. The same stone that covers the exterior also enters the house and wraps around the walls, providing experiential continuity; the same goes for the wood in the ceiling, which brings warmth and references the surrounding vegetation. Also, the metallic elements that define the marquee bring lightness and contemporaneity. In the interiors, designed by Camila and Mariana Lellis, natural elements are also valued, with wood serving as the protagonist.
