A community catalyst, the Convocation Center opens a window to the city, acting as a tribute to thriving, accessible education and generational progress on hallowed civil rights grounds.
Located on the site of Atlanta’s 1996 Olympic Complex, the center represents a major expansion of one of the nation’s most diverse universities while playing a vital role in revitalizing a long-neglected intown neighborhood. It also embodies the vision of the Summerhill Master Plan, developed by our Atlanta studio’s urban design team.
The Convocation Center aspires to turn an inward-focused program into an experience that provides visitors with a heightened sense of awareness and connection to its surrounding community and the city beyond.
Designed in collaboration with SLAM, the new multi-level center is an elegant presence that serves as a destination for university and community patrons. The exterior design encompasses a skillful blend of metal panel and glass positioned on a masonry base to create a facility that is visually appealing as well as efficient to operate.
Beyond its 8,000-seat multi-purpose arena, the Convocation Center showcases its versatility by hosting athletic events, convocations, commencements, conferences, concerts, and other major gatherings that reflect the university’s national and international stature. Designed for both academic and community use, the building includes flexible meeting and conference spaces, as well as dedicated areas for scheduled classroom activities throughout the week. It also houses strength and conditioning facilities, exam rooms, and offices serving GSU’s Athletics, Nursing, and Kinesiology departments.
