Louisiana State University Patrick F. Taylor Hall
Providing a multi-faceted program, LSU’s School of Engineering needed a larger, more welcoming space to encourage collaborative learning and active student engagement. Patrick F. Taylor Hall provides a new home for all current and future LSU engineers and celebrates the accomplishments associated with the various engineering departments. Not only is the building an innovative space that promotes problem-based teaching and research focused on sustainable solutions for global challenges, but it is the largest academic building on the LSU campus and one of the largest engineering buildings in the United States.
Our design focuses on collaborative spaces throughout the facility and provides common-access group study spaces to enhance the building’s transparency. We worked closely with faculty and staff to design natural-light filled spaces throughout the facility to create inviting study and research spaces. These spaces promote the idea of “Engineering on Display” and encourage incoming guests and students to observe many of the teaching and research spaces.
Daylighting is included through the entire design. We included a window at the end of every corridor and extensive use of glass to allow natural light to travel all the way through the building to create a more inviting space for students and researchers to collaborate. The Cambre Atrium is a continuous, three-story atrium has suspended cloud ceiling lights and terrazzo flooring to bring the outdoors into the space.
Innovative design places the teaching and research spaces on display and creates a more inviting atmosphere to showcase current projects for all of the different engineering departments. We developed the strategy of “Engineering on Display” with LSU to inspire incoming students and guests to actively engage with current projects and initiatives.
