Zan found his way to a career in landscape architecture by fusing a series of experiences together; an undergraduate degree in fine arts, work experiences as a ranger at an arboretum and a chef at a high-end French restaurant in addition to life lessons from an architect father.
After discovering his passion of landscape architecture, he honed his design skills in San Francisco and broadened his expertise leading sustainability and resilience strategies after joining Perkins and Will. He has contributed to a wide range of transformational projects from intimate gardens to large-scale campuses around the world. Zan has exhibited his work internationally and assisted in teaching at the nation’s leading design institutions. His work is marked by simple, yet thought-provoking methods for drawing out the distinctive character of the landscape including crafting high performance designs and strategies for sustainable environments.
At home, Zan loves to “take his work home with him” including gardening in his yard, drawing with his two boys, and traveling with his family to explore new and old places.
