Chris Hardie
Growing up in rural Scotland, Chris was surrounded by countryside and agricultural buildings. It was there that he realized that architecture does not have to be extravagant to be beautiful. Simple forms made from honest materials have lasting beauty.
Chris began his career working on cultural projects, buildings designed to celebrate human expression and creativity. He understands the transformative effect a library or museum can have in bringing a community together and strengthening its identity.
As a firmwide design director, he helps shape global design strategy and support ongoing major projects and new work across regions. He also fosters innovation and design excellence across our studios, while mentoring design talent and evolving our design process.
A resident of Shanghai since 2011, Chris founded the China studio of Schmidt Hammer Lassen (SHL), which joined our firm in 2018. He serves as design director for our combined Shanghai and Singapore studios and is an active member of our board of directors and design council.
Chris is an honorary professor of architecture at the Scott Sutherland School of Architecture at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen, U.K., and a distinguished professor of design at the Zhengzhou Institute of Finance and Economics School of Art and Design in Henan, China.
