Yan Krymsky

NCARB
Principal, Design Director, Los Angeles

Born in Odessa, Ukraine, Yan has been an Angeleno since 1979, having moved to the City of Angels with his parents at the age of three. Artistic and adventurous by nature, he spent his childhood and teenage years painting, singing, skateboarding, and surfing.

Yan’s innate passion for art guides his approach to architecture. In fact, if he hadn’t become an architect, he surely would have become a painter. As the Design Director of our LA studio, he emphasizes the use of vibrant colors and shapes—defining characteristics of West Coast design—in all of our projects. He also encourages empathy: gaining a deep understanding of, and appreciation for, the unique histories, cultures, and challenges of our clients. Combining research with imagination is imperative, Yan believes, because it leads to unconventional and often surprising design solutions—the hallmark of innovation.

Yan lives in Venice, California with his wife, their two sons, and their dog.

“Computation is reshaping the creative process and the way we as designers think about solving problems,” Yan says. “Our sustained commitment to research, innovation, and design excellence creates a platform for architecture of the highest caliber."
