Don has built a reputation as one of the nation’s premier arena, sports and entertainment venue architects. He has been personally involved in the design and renovation of more than 50 public assembly venues. Each project Don undertakes is approached with enthusiasm and undaunted attention to detail. Innovation, creativity, flexibility and cost-effectiveness characterize the designs of Don Dethlefs.
Among his most high-profile accomplishments are the award-winning designs for the Chesapeake Energy Arena (Home of the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder), PPL Center and Mixed-Use Development, University of Michigan Crisler Center Renovation/Expansion, and Red Rocks Visitor Center and Amphitheatre Improvements. His work at the Target Center (Home of the NBA Minnesota Timberwolves), Bell MTS Centre (Home of the NHL Winnipeg Jets) and the Ülker Sports Arena in Istanbul, Turkey are among some of his favorite projects as well.
In 2016, Don was recognized as one of 50 SportsBusiness Journal Power Players in Sports Facility Design and Development. He regularly serves as a symposium speaker at a variety of conferences including the SportsBusiness Journal’s Intercollegiate Athletics Forum, the International Association of Venue Managers’ Venue Connect Conference and the Association of Luxury Suite Directors’ Sports Venue Design and Build Forum.
Don graduated with honors from the University of Colorado, Boulder and went on to receive his Masters in Architecture from the University of Colorado, Denver.
